EASY 93.1 is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! We will be celebrating and recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month and the contributions Hispanic’s have made to American society and culture. Don Miguel Ruiz – Author of the 4 agreements (Mexico )

Trained as a neurosurgeon, a near-fatal car accident took author Don Miguel Ruiz down a spiritual path, through the roots of his Toltec ancestors in Mexico. His life change ultimately changed our lives when he published the book, ‘The Four Agreements’. The book was published in 1997 and has sold around 10 million copies. According to Don Miguel, the most important agreements are the ones we make with ourselves.

Marc Anthony – Artist (Puerto Rico)

Born Marco Antonio Muniz, Marc Anthony paid tribute to his Puerto Rican roots as a cast member of the new movie version of the musical, ‘In the Heights’. He has won multiple Grammy awards for both English and Spanish language albums, co-founded a children’s charity, the Maestro Cares Foundation, and today he celebrates his 53rd birthday.

Enrique Iglesias - Artist (Spain)

He’s just dropped his latest album, ‘Final’, but will it be his last? Enrique is hinting that may be the case as he has retirement on his mind. Anthony Ramos –‘Hamilton’ & ‘In the Heights’ (Puerto Rico)

Anthony Ramos paid tribute to his Puerto Rican roots in the lead role of ‘Usnavi’ in the movie version of ‘In the Heights’ - that came after he brought American History to life in the dual role of John Laurenz and Phiip Hamilton in the original Broadway version of ‘Hamilton’. As a triple-threat actor, singer and dancer, he’s been on TV Shows, on stage and in films, and still he never forgets where he started. In a typically joyful post on his Facebook page, Ramos credits his high school Theater teacher, Sara Steinweiss for enabling him to ‘live his dream’ - including helping him memorize his lines for his next starring role in the newest Transformers movie, due out next year. And displaying his sense of humor, Anthony mentions that, since he’s now considered an ‘A-List Actor’, he hired security - 2 adorable dogs, including a husky that he’s trying to teach to sing and rap - a rare fail for someone whose life has been blessed with considerable success. Lin Manuel-Miranda (Puerto Rico)

You might catch Lin Manuel Miranda at next week’s Emmy Awards, as the Disney Plus TV version of ‘Hamilton’ is up for 12 awards. But this son of Puerto Rican parents can’t slow down. He wrote or created music for the movie ‘in the Heights’; the animated Netflix cartoon, ‘Vivo’ ; “Freestyle Love Supreme”, conceived by Lin-Manuel, Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale – and now the subject of a Grammy Award-nominated documentary – Freestyle Love Supreme will make its triumphant return to Broadway October 7th ; and his charity duet with Jennifer Lopez, “Love Make the World Go Round”, originally written to benefit the victims and families of the Pulse Nightclub Shooting, was re-released on the 5th anniversary of the shooting, with proceeds still going to the charity fund.

Josie Bacallao – President / CEO of Hispanic Unity of Broward (Cuba)

Born in Cuba, Josie comes from a family of activists. Her father was imprisoned in Cuba after the Bay of Pigs. If not for a program allowing families of Cuban prisoners of the Bay of Pigs to come to America, Josie might never have grown up in Miami, or made the enormous impact on residents and immigrants that she has as President & CEO of Hispanic Unity of Florida. She has led the non-profit in expanding its outreach to serve people from more than 30 countries, helping them to acclimate to American culture, and ultimately become American citizens. After 18 years with Hispanic Unity, Josie will retire at the end of 2021.

Nestor Torres (Puerto Rico)

Born in Puerto Rico, Grammy-award winning Flautist Nestor Torres ultimately settled in Miami and has become part of the fabric of our community – musically, culturally and charitably. Eddy Alvarez – Miami Marlins, 2x Olympic Winner (Cuban-American)

Eddy ‘Alvarez, is one of only six people in history to medal in both the summer and winter Olympics, in two different sports. After winning silver in speed-skating in 2014, he turned to baseball. It took years in the minor leagues before he made the Majors - on his hometown team, the Miami Marlins – leading to his second Olympic silver - playing Baseball for Team USA. The Diaz-Balart Family has made quite an impression since immigrating from Cuba. Oldest brother Rafael became a banker. Vicky Bakery founders – Antonio & Gelasio Cao (Cuba)

The Vicky Bakery story is one of love. Founders Antonio & Gelasia Cao met & fell in love while working at a bakery in Cuba. When they came to Miami as political refugees, they took their love of baking and opened the first Vicky Bakery in Hialeah. The labor of love has now passed to the next generation with the opening of Cao bakery, named for Antonio, but also standing for Cuban American Baker. The famed pastelitos and croquetas can now be shipped nationwide, and Cao bakery has franchises available.

Tito Puente – Artist (wrote Oye Como Va) (Puerto Rico)

Tito Puente grew up in Spanish Harlem in New York City, where his parents had moved from Puerto Rico. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he attended the Juilliard School of Music, and became known as ‘The King of Latin Music’, as featured in the film ‘The Mambo Kings’. Two of his greatest legacies were born in 1971 – the song ‘Oye Como Va’, one of Santana’s most enduring hits … and his son, Tito Puente Jr., who continues to create Latin jazz fusion from his home base here in Miami.

  • He won 5 Grammy Awards, including a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as the Billboard Latin Music Achievement Award

Carlos Santana-Artist (Mexico)

The man, the band, the guitar legend – all ways to describe Carlos Santana, the son of a Mexican Mariachi player. Carlos’ musical explorations went much farther, as he combined rock, Latin Jazz and African Rhythms, creating his own distinct World Music sound. From Woodstock to his Vegas Residency at the House of Blues, to collaborations with Steve Winwood and Rob Thomas, Carlos Santana deserves every award he’s won in his 5- decade musical career.

Carlos Albizu Miranda- Albizu University (Puerto Rico)

Ellen Ochoa- Astronaut (Mexico)

Ellen Ochoa’s achievements are out of this world – literally. Of Mexican heritage, Ochoa stood out because of her intelligence and work ethic. After just two years at NASA, she was selected as an astronaut and became the first Hispanic-American woman to fly aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. After three more space missions, Ochoa became the first Hispanic-American director of the Johnson Space Center. She has received numerous awards, has six schools named after her, and is a big supporter of STEM education.

Celia Cruz - Artist (Cuba)

3 Grammy awards, 4 Latin Grammy’s, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the President’s National Medal of Arts, and the 2001 Forever Stamp, part of a series of Forever Latin Music Legends. With stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Walk of Fame at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach, the honors are endless for the legendary ‘Queen of Salsa’, Celia Cruz.
