KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Where do old horses roam? In Missouri, at Fred Snow's former-golf-course-turned-horse ranch.
"Most of the horses that we end up with would have gone to an auction and from the auction to a kill pen," Snow said.
The ranch is not a charity, although it does get by with help from volunteers.
"We're not even a business. This is a variety of people coming together with a hobby," Snow said.
For some horses, it's their last stop. For others it's a transition to another home. Snow took in 52 horses last year. All but five were matched.
"Most of them were senior horses that came to the end of their life," he said. "They didn't have anywhere to go and they came here."
He has not yet said no to someone who wants to drop off a horse.
“Many of the horses didn’t come in, in bad shape,” Snow said. “They just hadn’t been ridden in 12 or 15 years.”
