According to a news release Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Hannah Star Esser, 20, has been charged with murder.

The DA’s office said on Sunday just before 8:30 p.m., Esser, while driving, confronted a man in Santa Ana, California, who she believed was trying to run over a cat in the street with his car.

According to The Associated Press, Esser and Luis Anthony Victor, 43, got out of their cars and argued. Esser allegedly recorded the argument on her phone. She then got back in her car, turned around, and allegedly struck Victor.

The DA’s office said Victor was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This action showed a complete disregard for human life,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer in the news release. “The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will ensure that this random act of violence targeting a stranger will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

If Esser is convicted, the DA said she could face 25 years to life.

No further information has been released.
