Recall alert: Grimmway Farms recalls select carrots amid potential salmonella contamination

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Grimmway Farms is recalling six varieties of carrots sold nationwide because they may have been contaminated with salmonella.

“The health of our customers and the integrity of our products are our highest priorities, and we will continue to monitor and communicate as additional information is available,” Grimmway Farms President and CEO Jeff Huckaby said in a prepared statement, noting the voluntary recall was initiated as a result of a “routine, internal company test.”

To date, no illnesses linked to the recall have been confirmed, but the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that salmonella bacteria are responsible for roughly 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the United States each year.

Healthy individuals infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, but if the bacteria migrate to the bloodstream, more serious conditions such as endocarditis, arthritis and arterial infections can occur. Meanwhile, young children, the elderly and others with compromised immune systems can develop serious, and sometimes fatal, infections, the CDC stated.

According to the recall notice, all affected food manufacturers, food service distributors and retail customers have been notified, with “much of the product having been recaptured before being available for consumption.”

The following recalled products were shipped directly to retailers nationwide:
