KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A boy died early Monday after bullets were fired into a Missouri apartment, striking him as he slept, authorities said.

According to KCTV, the shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m. CDT at the Citadel Apartments in Kansas City, police said. The boy was sleeping inside the apartment when gunfire erupted outside, KMBC reported.

The boy, who suffered a gunshot wound to the face, was taken to a nearby hospital and later died, according to the news outlets.

Authorities have not publicly released the victim's name or age, KMBC reported. Investigators are still in the process of identifying possible suspects, according to KCTV.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas took to Twitter early Monday, calling the news "a nightmare for any parent."

"I can't imagine the pain with which they're dealing this morning," Lucas wrote. "The boy was asleep. Malicious shooting with no regard for others claims another innocent life in our city."
